Job Flows and Productivity Dynamics: Evidence from U.S. Manufacturing

چکیده

Through their influence on the cross-sectional distribution of productivity across firms and workers, job creation and destruction likely have an impact on the rate at which aggregate productivity changes over time. However, the nature of this effect is not, a priori, clear. While a broad consensus has emerged suggesting that job destruction enhances productivity by eliminating inefficient production units, theories disagree with regard to the effect of job creation. In particular, ‘vintage-capital’ theories of creative destruction suggest a positive influence since job flows are conjectured to represent the reallocation of labor from lowto high-productivity positions. Others suggest that job creation may, instead, represent the expansion of employment primarily along a lowskill (or low ‘match-quality’) dimension. In such a case, job creation would serve to lower aggregate productivity. This paper estimates the influence of job creation and destruction on total factor productivity (TFP) growth using annual data on 389 4digit U.S. manufacturing industries over the period 1974-1993. As expected, the results reveal a positive association between job destruction and changes in TFP. Yet, they also indicate that, contrary to the creative-destruction view, job creation tends to have a negative effect on productivity growth. ∗The views expressed herein are those of the author and do not represent the official positions of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis or the Federal Reserve System.

Gross Worker and Job Flows in a Transition Economy: An Analysis of Estonia by

The results and conclusions of this analysis are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect concurrence by the World Bank. We thank Debabrata Das for superb research assistance. 1 For example, recent studies indicate that about half of the productivity growth in U.S. 1 manufacturing over the 1980s is accounted for by the reallocation of resources from less productive to more productive...

The Effects of China's Growth in Manufacturing Sector in the U.S. Economy

T his paper investigates the gain of bilateral trade between China and U.S. in manufacturing sectors when both countries play a role in asymmetric (biased) growth of  international trade. Our model includes a special case of Biased Growth Theory in international trade. We collected labor productivity, export and import data by using classification of manufacturing industries, for U.S...

Job flows in Swedish manufacturing 1972 - 1996

This paper deals with the heterogeneous employment outcome at the plant level in Swedish manufacturing over the period 1972-96. Non-negligible gross flows of jobs is found to be a pronounced feature in Swedish manufacturing, but as compared to results on U.S. data, the average pace of job reallocation has not been as high. However, masked behind low averages are periods of largescale job reallo...

Job flows and labor dynamics in the U.S. Rust Belt

Differences in growth, wages, and unemployment across metropolitan areas are well documented in the urban and regional economics literature.1 Researchers, however, know little about the underlying labor dynamics and establishment characteristics related to such differences. With establishment microdata, linked across time, one can analyze employment growth in terms of the number of jobs created...
